About Hampden-Sydney College

Hampden-Sydney College is a liberal arts college for men located in Hampden-Sydney, which is a census-designated place in Prince Edward County, in the US state of Virginia, with a number of approximately 1260 people, living within its limits, at the time of the 2000 census estimate.

The college was established in 1775 and it is the oldest private charter in the South, US' 10th oldest college, one of only three four-year, all-men's liberal arts colleges in USA, and the last college founded before the American Revolution.

It offers its students majors in various areas of study, including an Honors Program, study-abroad programs, public service concentration, and a joint BS/MD program with Eastern Virginia Medical School and The George Washington University.

Athletics

Hampden-Sydney's athletic teams call themselves the Tigers and they compete in NCAA Division III, Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are garnet and gray.

Notable Alumni

Since first opening its doors to students, Hampden-Sydney College has produced numerous notable alumni, among them also being: Stephen Colbert - comedian, host of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, John Peter Mettauer - first plastic surgeon in US, W. Randolph Chitwood Jr., MD - pioneered robotic cardiac surgery in the US for minimally invasive heart surgery, plus others.
